Getting it together

Currently Listening to: New Basics Brass Band – Live at Dick’s Den 11.15.07
So, along with the new website, I’m also working on acquiring some additional home recording equipment. Certainly not building a home studio, by any means… that would require at least a semi-permanent home, which I do not have.
However, I’ll be working on expanding my current recording abilities over the next several months, so that I can do a bit more sophisticated remote overdubs. I also want to work more on some of the ideas I’ve had for original compositions and clinic material over the years, and if I have an easier way to do that, I think things will progress at a much quicker rate than they have been.
Soooo… that means a lot of research, and of course ……… spending money!!! Awesome, right? I’ll keep you posted as things progress with this endeavour.
Thanks,
~AB

Day of website making

Currently Listening to: Atomship – The Crash of ‘47
I’ve been told that my picture on my old website made me look creepy & zombie-like. I’ve been meaning to remedy this for awhile, but haven’t been able to bring myself to ask someone to take photos of me, as that seems pretty vain, even when there’s a purpose for it. So, I remained a grey-orange tinted zombie-version of myself… until now.
As I was browsing all the super cool things at the Apple Store one day, I happened to get a terribly strong urge to buy something. I ended up finding iLife ’08, and decided I had to have it. Started messing around with iWeb… one thing led to another… and here you have it. I realize that this application is just one more excuse for me to never learn how to actually write html code, but I’ve come to terms with that, and I’m moving on.
So, the cool thing about this new website is that I’ll be able to have a pretty cool newsfeed/blog (i.e. the one you’re reading) that people can subscribe to, and I’ll have a lot more freedom to update photos and videos and such when I get the chance, since I won’t have to attempt to edit code and/or bug my faithful web-savvy roommate to do it for me.
So, look for updates soon!
Thanks,
~AB

Drum Building Update 2.8.08

Currently Listening to: Kenny Garret – Triology
For those of you that don’t know me too well, I have a strange addiction to building drums. It seems that regardless of the number of drums that I have, I keep on building new ones to serve different purposes. It’s a great hobby, though, and I have a lot of fun in the design process and in the hands-on assembly process as well. It’s cool knowing that I can in fact create something that will have lasting value even after I’m long gone.
All that being said, I have a couple of projects in the works at the moment. They’re slow-going, despite the relative simplicity of the designs. The first is a drum that’s going to be what I would call a “utilitarian” design, intended mainly for studio use. I guess I’d call it “utilitarian” because I don’t predict that it’s going to be a very versatile drum when it’s completed, due to it’s size, 15”x6.5” (diameter x depth). Considering that a standard size is 14”x5.5” (or so), this is going to be a very deep sounding snare drum, useful for really fat meaty backbeats that I think will sound great for recordings, but may not have a wide enough tuning range to do much else (i.e. a One Trick Pony). I could be wrong, though, as it is a very nicely made maple stave shell by a company named Unix, out of Canada.
So, for now I’m still trying to nail down the exact finish and hardware I’m going to apply to the shell. Finish-wise, I’m leaning towards a Vermont Maple stain, and a high-gloss clear coat. Hardware-wise, I think I’ll be using Chrome Egonis Double-Endo lugs from Ego Drum Supply.
That’s all I have figured out so far. More updates to come.
Thanks,
~AB

Pete Chimbidis album – In My Hands

This is a plug for my good friend and band mate Pete Chimbidis. He recently recorded and released his first solo album, entitled “In My Hands.” This album features many highly talented musicians from the local Columbus music scene including members of Sharp Circle and the New Basics Brass Band. I had a lot of fun working with Pete on this album, and hope that you will enjoy listening to it. The CD is available through Pete’s website and also on iTunes. Show some love and take a listen.

Thanks,~AB
